Recent media reports have indicated that the Low Pay Commission is set to make recommendations to increase the minimum wage by 65c an hour in next month’s Budget. The Low Pay Commission makes recommendations to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment designed to set a minimum wage that is fair and sustainable. When appropriate the minimum wage can be adjusted to assist as many low-paid workers as possible without harming overall employment or competitiveness.
Over the past number of years increases recommended by the Low Pay Commission took account of rising inflation concerns resulting in a rise of the minimum wage from €12.70 to €13.50 in January 2025. While the purported recommendations have yet to be published businesses may face a 5% expected increase to minimum wage in 2026.
