Labour Court Publishes 2024 Annual Report
The Labour Court has just last week published its Annual Report for 2024. The report sets outs details of the Labour Court’s operations and activities during 2024.
Among the key figures in this year’s report were:
- 1,119 appeals and referrals received by the Labour Court in 2024, a 2% decrease from the number received in 2023, which was 1,141.
- Of the 1,119 received in 2024, 885 (79%) were employment rights-related appeals and 234 (21%) were industrial relations appeals and referrals. This pattern of referral i.e. greater numbers of employment rights referrals versus industrial relations referrals, represents a continuation of a trend observed since the passing of the Workplace Relations Act, 2015.
- In 2024, the Court issued 507 recommendations/determinations/decisions. The corresponding figure for 2023 was 425.
Of particular interest to Employers is the type of claim most referred to the Labour Court.
In 2024, of the 885 employment rights appeals received by the Labour Court, just over half were in respect of appeals under the Unfair Dismissals Act, the Employment Equality Act and the Payment of Wages Act.
A further third of referrals were made under the Organisation of Working Time Act, Terms of Employment (Information) Act, Minimum Notice & Terms of Employment Act and Redundancy Payments Act with the remainder of referrals falling under a wide range of employment statutes.
The figures in this year’s report are instructive for Employers and highlight the most common compliance gaps that lead to Employee claims. Read more about how our services can support your Employee Relations needs here.
