  • Wide Spread Industrial Disputes Now Inevitable

    At the recent Adare Human Resource Management breakfast briefings across the country, I pointed out the ever-growing alarming trends of industrial disputes. The context of the presentation was very much related to the understanding of labour market pay expectations in light of recent high profile industrial dispute outcomes. Last month in this Newsletter I covered escalating difficulties within the public health sector and in particular Emergency Department support staff. This dispute has now come to a head with the withdrawal of labour at a number of Emergency Departments scheduled for March 7th, along with a completely separate Nurses “work to rule” to commence on the same day. Other industrial disputes are now taking place in the public transport sector, bus and rail, as well as the private sector for example at the Kerry Group and major retailer Tesco.

  • Bus Éireann Dispute Would Halt All Bus & Rail Public Transport

    Management have formally advised the workforce at Bus Éireann that the financial state of the company is such that nothing short of significant reductions in cost, including cuts to employee pay and premiums is required at a minimum in order for the enterprise to continue to exist. The National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) has told Bus Éireann that it is not prepared to engage in talks with pre-conditions related to the terms and conditions of its members and an all-out strike was scheduled at the company from February 20th. The NBRU has said it will only engage in talks with management if the company's previous correspondence setting out planned cuts is withdrawn.
