    The Christmas party season is fast approaching. What is usually a great night for most may create issues with a small minority of Employees. Organisations should be thinking about how to ensure that any fallout is limited through careful planning and notifications in terms of acceptable behaviour from Employees. Whilst the Christmas party is seen as an opportunity for Employers to thank Employees for all of their dedication and hard work throughout the year, it can also create issues for Employers. For example, where a situation arises at a Christmas party or social event which has repercussions in the employment relationship may become the Employers problem to deal with.

  • Case Law- Incidents in the Workplace – Alcohol and Drugs

    Continuing with the party theme, in this month’s newsletter we consider two cases of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. The first case we consider involved an altercation which occurred during a Christmas Party in which a former Employee became violent during two separate incidents during the course of the party and was awarded €25,000.The second case involved a member of cabin crew becoming “mentally unstable” during a flight as a result of taking cannabis. The Adare Human Resource Management team reflect on these cases and examine the key learnings for Organisations.
