  • Labour Court Recommend Pay Increases of 6.4% in UCB Shannon SIPTU Dispute

    In recent months the number of recommendations emanating from the Labour Court directly relating to pay disputes appears to be increasing and shows no sign of abating. Whilst one or two of these have led to national news prominence, most notably the LUAS dispute, the increasing volume of such disputes from the private sector into the state IR machinery will most likely form a significant challenge for the new Government. In the national economic context this challenge and the risks associated with it should not be underestimated.

  • Court Refuses to Hear Shannon Airport Authority’s Workers Case

    In a most unusual referral taken by a group of Employees at Shannon Airport Authority through Solicitor’s and Legal Counsel under Section 20(1) of the Industrial Relations Act 1969, at which the Employer chose not attend, the Labour Court ultimately asserted that it “cannot process the claims before it”. The case in point (LCR21183) is an example of the confusion and complications that can be caused when provisions of collective agreements, as well as their application and interpretation move from established IR processes and parties to legal parties with no input to those actual agreements.
