Return to work interviews are widely regarded as one of the most effective tools in dealing with sick leave absence. Line Managers have a key role to play and should ensure that a Return to Work Interview is conducted after every sick leave absence, regardless of duration. Such meetings provide a clear organisational message that Employee health is taken seriously, attendance at work is valued, and that a failure to do so will be noted and discussed. Return to Work Interviews serve a number of purposes:
- To update the Employee on what has taken place during their absence;
- To allow the Employee to outline the absence for absence and enable the Line Manager to raise any concerns which may exist;
- To discuss the Employee’s return to work and determine if any additional supports or accommodation is required;
- To determine if the absence is work related;
- To highlight to the Employee that managing absenteeism is a priority for the Organisation.
